Why is there no class action lawsuit yet? Of the 8 people that I work with who own either a VW or Audi with this motor, as of today only one has not shit the bed with <80K miles on the clock. This is nuts!

Welcome to fine German engineering. It’s why we won the war.
I still maintain that all the VW fanbois are just made up dudes by Wolfsburg, Germany. No way can people love these cars that much while they tear through their wallets for repairs.

Are you talking about the new engines? Like the one I have in my 16 GTI?
Gawd dammit.

Yes. They have fairly short lifespans.

*Looks at S600*
Don’t worry baby, I’ll always love you, even if you take all of my money...

If the new GTIs still use the EA113, then yes (I think they do but I’m not 100%).

Define “shit the bed”. I’m having a tough time picturing 8 bad engines in the same office building, even if they were all different.

I think all were piston failure. Three of them also had the same problems with failing fuel injectors as well.

To be fair, as long as we keep a minimum 8 quarts of Mobile 1 in the pan and have functioning oil and water pumps, we will never have to worry about our pistons, cranks, valetrain, cams, blocks, or cylinder liners. And we have properly executed timing chains with metal guides and tensioners that should realistically never have to be serviced.
Our engines will never fail with basic maintenance. It is everything PERIPHERAL to the engine like tandem pumps, alternators, and turbochargers that fail catastrophically and with shocking regularity.

Nah, you have the EA888 and those have been fairly good by VW standards.

They use the new EA888.

You are underestimating gearheads love of the smell of their own money burning.

We have an ‘08 A4 2.0t in the family with 90,000 miles and it’s been in the shop only for service intervals. They’re good engines, but you really have to be on it with maintenance.
My ‘16 Jetta 1.8t on the other hand, with only like 5,000 miles on it has spent 10 days in the shop. Three different times.

For what?
![]() 11/14/2016 at 18:50 |

Engine issue, transmission issue and a fueling issue.
![]() 11/14/2016 at 18:54 |

Dang. It’s so new too!
![]() 11/14/2016 at 18:55 |

Yup and I expect more issues out of it.
My 1997 A4 broke exactly zero times with 140,000 miles on it. Just goes to show...

It is a tank of an engine.

I’m keeping my eye on a 2013 Allroad that’s for sale near my house but I’m just getting pangs of nervousness when I think about VAG reliability.
![]() 11/14/2016 at 18:58 |

Too many diesels in line ahead of them? Just guessing...
![]() 11/14/2016 at 19:00 |

Those have actually been really reliable so far. I’d totally go for one.

Everything I’ve read has been related to oil consumption issues.
![]() 11/14/2016 at 19:06 |
|
From what I’ve seen, those issues are mostly a thing of the past.
That looks really nice, love that brown interior.
![]() 11/14/2016 at 19:07 |

I think the interior is what has me really interested in it.

I have a GTi with damn near 160,000 on it with no issues. You have to keep up on maintenance and keep a watchful eye on the cam follower, but apart from that I haven’t had much trouble with the engine.

GTIs and golfs have been using the EA888 engine for a while now...like over 7 years IIRC
![]() 11/14/2016 at 19:37 |

something tells me this is either exaggerated or all of his coworkers are total morons when it comes to maintaining their cars...
![]() 11/14/2016 at 20:12 |

The EA88888888888?
I was under the impression these were good motors.
![]() 11/15/2016 at 00:23 |

GTI switched to EA888 in 2008, although the 2013 Golf R had an EA113.

Don’t underestimate the power of Stockholm syndrome.

What about Audi? When did they switch? Two of these cars are A5 with the 2.0 and they both suffered the same issue as the vee dubs.
![]() 11/15/2016 at 11:28 |
|
I believe they switched in 2008 as well, and the A5 has never had EA113 engines IIRC.
![]() 11/15/2016 at 11:56 |

Then I assume the EB888 is having the same issues the EB113 had. Three of these cars are post 2008 Audis (the two A5s and one A4) the other 4 are all VWs, three EOS and one CC.
